Haven’t posted a new episode of TunezU radio in a good long while, so I thought I’d make up a list of my summer jams.
Bloc Party – Ratchet – Quite possibly my most listened to band of the last 5 years (and possibly number two band of all-time after the can’t-be-topped Tribe Called Quest) released another fantastic song off of a four song EP this summer.
Schoolboy Q – Collard Greens – Before he was killing every relevant rapper alive, Kendrick Lamar was coming on songs like this tasty Schoolboy Q jam and making them better.
A$AP Ferg – Shabba – I’m a handful of years before my daughter wonders why her dad has all of these new rap songs on his Spotify playlists. Love the chorus on this one…
The 1975 – Sex – A stronger song than their debut single (“Chocolate”). I could see this song blowing up.
Foals – My Number – Quite possibly my favorite chilled-out running song this summer. I’ve ran many miles early in runs/races this summer to this song.
MS MR- Hurricane – Strong voice and a super catchy chorus. All of the makings of a great song
Mona – Goons (Baby, I Need It All) – Listening to Mona’s first two albums, I’m convinced these guys are the best true new(ish) rock band out there right now. They are making killer song after killer song. If this was 1996, this song would be a top 10 radio song right now.
Kendrick Lamar – m.A.A.d city – I should be sick of this song. I’ve listened to it a thousand times. Every run, I’ve got it on the playlist. Every day on my drive home from work, I’m listening to it. My only complaint about the song is they just should’ve ended it after the first “song” and not added the completely different song at the halfway point of the song.
Bastille – Pompeii – Big sound. I’m not sure if “the kids” are into this one, but I could see this being the “Somebody I Used to Know” of this year.
The Killers – All These Things I’ve Done – Just saw these guys in concert and had to include them on the list. I know it’s not a new song, but nobody can grow tired of the “I’ve got soul, but I’m not a soldier…” interlude.
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis – Otherside – One week until I get to see these guys live. It’s unfortunate I didn’t get to see them, ya know, before everyone in the planet sound a seat next to me aboard the bandwagon. Still a great song by a great duo.
Kanye West – Black Skinhead – Haven’t grown tired of the Yeezus album. No real singles, but nothing but solid albums. I hear more of Gary Glitter every time I listen to this song.
