Music Video of the Week – Macklemore & Ryan Lewis – Same Love

If you absolutely can’t stomach the ideas of two dudes kissing, you probably aren’t going to love this song. To me, the fact that we are still fighting over rights for gay couples blows my mind. I remember in elementary school we were studying African-American civil rights. I recall talking about Martin Luther King, Jr and all of the stuff that happened in the 60s. Doing some simple math, I figured out that my parents were roughly the same age that I was at the time. I specifically recall asking them “Why did people used to be so mean to black people?” and they had no answer for me. I feel like someday in the very near future, my kids are going to ask me the very same thing and my answer for them isn’t going to be much better. To me, this issue has gotten out of control. Political elections are won or lost solely based on this (should be minor) issue. To me, the fact that two people can’t get health/life insurance benefits the same as I do is a crime against humanity.

Ryan Lewis & Macklemore – a Seattle rapper who just happens to have two gay uncles – has made a bit of a political song off his debut album (due out tomorrow!) that is featured as our music video of the week. The amount of range shown by Macklemore – from serious songs like Same Love, Wings, and Otherside to fun-loving songs like Thrift Shop, American, and And We Danced to awesome straight up hip hop songs like Can’t Hold Us and The Town – is quite impressive. Acts like this give me a huge amount of hope for the future of hip hop…
