A couples months ago, I did a column about guys we forgot were once uber-athletic. Shawn Kemp is the posterboy for this. I think we often think of Shawn Kemp as the fat guy making a fat paycheck with Cleveland while seemingly impregnating every woman in Washington and Ohio. We often forget that he was the baddest power forward on the baddest team in the West for many years. We think back on the Stockton-Malone era as the most wonderful thing ever. Had the Sonics kept the band together, though, would we have seen a Jazz-Bulls final twice in a row? In 1996, the Sonics played the Jazz to go the Finals. Kemp averaged 20 points and 9.7 boards and GP averaged 20.7 points, 6 boards, 6 assists and a steal and a half. Malone averaged 27 and 11.5 and Stockton averaged 9.7 points, 7.5 assists, and a steal and a half. Which duo would you have preferred in 1996? Of course, the Sonics traded Reignman to the Cavs after the 1997 season, so we’ll never know.
