If you really wanted to search through my online footprint, you could find somewhere between 500-1000 references of me complaining about new rap being inferior to old school rap. While
I’ve felt this way for close to 10 years now, I’ve noticed within the last handful of years that the new generation of hip hop artists seem to be infinitely better than the generation before them. Part of me wonders if this new generation grew up listening to Kanye West, playing with GarageBand, and listening to all kinds of different music that was suddenly more accessible thanks to the internet.

The first time I heard A$AP Rocky, I kind of dismissed him. It wasn’t that I thought he was necessarily bad. It was just kind of the same feeling I had about Tyler, The Creator, Kreayshawn, or J. Cole. Just not my thing.

As I listened a little more, though, I realized that not only was A$AP Rocky in my wheelhouse, it was really, really in my wheelhouse. The only other rapper that I’ve disliked as much and eventually grown to like is the terribly named Waka Flaka Flame. As in through the first month and a half of the year, this is my favorite 2013 album thus far. My one and only complaint about this album is the absence of Peso.
